Sophia Baudelaire Artist Statement

Stone Artisan Prayer Beads

Sophia Baudelaire is a multidisciplinary artist working in fiber, stone, and ritual-based installation systems. Her practice explores matter and material as a source of embodied spiritual knowledge, where handwork, repetition, and symbolic construction become languages for connection, memory, and transformation.

Working primarily through bead-work, textile structure, and sculptural devotional forms, Baudelaire creates objects that function simultaneously as material artifacts and experiential frameworks. These works are informed by sacred geometry, pattern logic, and meditative construction processes, translating spiritual experience into spatial and tactile form.

Baudelaire’s work is rooted in slow, intentional making. Each piece is constructed through repetitive, precise hand processes that emphasize touch, rhythm, and continuity. Materials such as stone, fiber, and cord are treated as active components within a larger system of composition and meaning.

Rather than existing as static objects, her works are conceived as part of evolving installation environments—pieces that can be held, worn, activated, or spatially arranged within immersive settings.

Baudelaire’s practice engages ritual not as religious doctrine, but as a method of sustained meditative attention. Her process involves structured, repetitive making that foregrounds presence, intention, and embodied focus. These systems of making create works that hold time as a material component.

Each object is approached as part of a larger relational field between maker, material, and viewer. The work invites proximity, contemplation, and sensory engagement rather than passive observation. In installation form, Baudelaire’s works operate as immersive environments constructed from modular sculptural elements. These spaces are designed to be entered and experienced physically, creating pathways through which viewers encounter material, light, and spatial rhythm.

Her installations emphasize connection—not as concept, but as lived spatial experience—where the viewer’s movement activates the work.

Baudelaire’s practice is informed by embodiment, repetition, and systems of symbolic order. Her work examines how meaning is formed through material repetition and how personal and cultural narratives are embedded in objects of devotion, care, and labor. Through this lens, her installations and objects become sites where material practice and lived experience converge.

Sophia Baudelaire’s mala works are rooted in the broader global history of prayer bead traditions, which appear across many religious and contemplative systems, including Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Islamic, and other spiritually meditative lineages.

A mala (Sanskrit for “garland”) is traditionally a strand of beads used to support contemplative repetition and focused attention. In Baudelaire’s practice, malas are constructed as 108-bead sequences with a defining marker bead, reflecting historical structural forms found in Tibetan and other South Asian meditation traditions.

Each work is hand-knotted and composed using natural materials such as stone, crystal, and wood. Rather than functioning as objects of instruction or doctrine, these bead forms are approached as material systems for rhythm, attention, and embodied sequencing.

Across traditions, prayer beads serve as tactile technologies for sustaining focus through repetition. Baudelaire’s practice engages this lineage through a contemporary artisan lens, emphasizing material intelligence, pattern, and the physicality of repetition as a grounding force in lived experience.

Her works are conceived not only as wearable or held objects, but as part of a broader installation and material practice that explores how structure, rhythm, and touch generate meaning over time.
